The Climate Fresk in Bahidora Mexico

At the end of February, the Climate Fresk took over the exotic gardens of The Estacas, in the state of Morelos, for a weekend.

Bahidora aims to be one of the biggest sustainable festivals of Latin America. It usually takes place during the weekend from 18 to 20th February in a marvelous garden with a clear river, in Morelos state.

It aims to offer a space for people to question individual and collective practices impacting the environment. For Bahidora, it’s important to not only mitigate the environmental impacts of the event, but also to promote environmental values. Adaptation is critical in Mexico, as the vast majority of the Mexican population emits less than 4 tons of CO2 per year. Raising awareness on climate change in the country is nevertheless crucial.

One month before the event, a group of Freskers in Mexico (including our fantastic Country Coordinator, Lucile and 6 Facilitators) contacted the Festival organisers (via Instagram!) to tell them about the incredible experience that is the Climate Fresk workshop.

The Experience Manager of the festival was very enthusiastic. Barely one month before the start of the festival, he granted the Freskers a 30-minute spot to present Climate Fresk, as well as a small stage to fresk festival-goers on the Sunday morning, in the heart of the festival!

Planning a workshop on the last day of a festival at 10 in the morning is a risky affair. On the D Day, after a few minutes, no one was here and the Freskers started to worry…

That’s when they decided to put themselves in “sonidero” mode, as they say in Mexico. That means: trying to rally the crowd by casting messages on the microphone. Four Freskers stationed themselves in the 4 corners of the space and assembled the freshly awakened festival-goers… and it worked!

Little by little the tables started filling up… and the magic happened! Despite the remnants of a hangover, participants wondered “How many vegan stands are there at the festival?”, “What about the carbon footprint of the event?”… Together with the facilitators, they discussed adaptation strategies to the climate crisis. They had truly made an impact and raised awareness about climate change.

Like in many other countries, Climate Fresk in Mexico is taking a great dynamic. We are now 70 facilitators in Mexico, young and old, divided between CDMX, Monterrey and Guadalajara… and the movement has only just begun!
